Mornings beat afternoons
Across all months, Fuji was fully visible on 36.6% of 8 AM checks, 23.3% at noon and 22.5% at 4 PM. The city says it gets harder to see as the day goes on.
This is Fuji City's log, kept at Fuji City Hall on the Shizuoka side, south of the mountain. There is no Hakone dataset, so read it as a guide for the month, not a promise for the lake.
Where to stand in Hakone
- Lake Ashi at Moto-Hakone, south of the boat pier. The classic view.
- Heiwa no Torii, Hakone Shrine's red gate at the water, built in 1952. Frame Fuji behind it.
- Lake Ashi boat, Moto-Hakone to Togendai, past the torii.
- Hakone Ropeway and Owakudani. February boarding runs 9 AM to 5 PM, so it cannot be your 8 AM shot.
Timing and plan B
Hakone's tourism site recommends the lake early, when mist on still water can mirror Fuji. JNTO says Owakudani is frequently closed for volcanic activity and gas, and the ropeway can stop in bad weather, so keep the boat and Hakone Shrine as plan B.
Sleep there
The earliest Romancecar leaves Shinjuku at 7:00 and reaches Hakone-Yumoto at 8:26 (timetable dated Mar 14, 2026). A day trip misses the 8 AM check. Two nights means two Fuji mornings.
